1. Distinguish translation from localization
Translation: converting text from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL) while preserving meaning.
Localization goes further — it addresses:
- Cultural references: idioms, humor, metaphors, historical events, celebrities, local icons — what resonates in one culture may be meaningless or offensive in another
- Visual and UI adaptation: colors (white = mourning in some East Asian cultures; green = religious significance in Muslim contexts), imagery (hand gestures, clothing, family compositions), icons (mailbox shapes vary by country)
- Measurement and format localization:
- Date: MM/DD/YYYY (US) vs DD/MM/YYYY (EU) vs YYYY/MM/DD (ISO/Japan)
- Currency: symbol, decimal separator, thousand separator (€1.234,56 vs $1,234.56)
- Temperature: Fahrenheit vs Celsius
- Units: imperial (US) vs metric (global)

3. Apply cultural adaptation for tone and voice
Different locales have different expectations for formality, directness, and communication style:
- German, Dutch, Scandinavian: direct, factual, low-context communication; features and technical accuracy are valued; marketing warmth that works in US contexts can seem superficial
- Japanese, Korean: high-context; indirect; group harmony valued; direct negative language is avoided; excessive directness violates norms

Transcreation vs. translation: when marketing copy (slogans, taglines, emotional appeals) is culturally specific, direct translation produces awkward results. Transcreation rewrites the content in the target language to achieve the same emotional effect — not a word-for-word translation.
4. Localize visual design and imagery
Review all visual elements for cultural appropriateness:
- Stock photography: images showing people should represent the target market's demographics, not the source market
- Color associations: test color choices against target cultural meanings (red = luck in China, danger in Western contexts; green = religious in many Muslim contexts; white = purity in West, mourning in East Asian contexts)
- Icons and symbols: iconography varies by culture — a "house" icon, "mailbox," or "phone" may look different in different countries

5. Test with target locale users
After localization, test with native users in the target locale:
- Linguistic review: have a native speaker (not the translator) review for naturalness; translated text is often accurate but unnatural to native readers
- Cultural review: ask a subject-matter expert in the target culture to review for cultural appropriateness and local relevance
- Technical/functional testing: test all locale-specific functionality: date formats, currency display, character encoding (UTF-8 for broad support), right-to-left layout (for Arabic/Hebrew)
- Usability testing: a small usability study (5–8 participants) with target locale users reveals localization failures that linguistic review misses
6. Establish a localization process for ongoing maintenance
Localization is not a one-time event; it requires ongoing maintenance:

Common Mistakes
- Translating only text, ignoring visual and format localization: a product with perfectly translated text but wrong date format, currency symbol, or culturally inappropriate imagery still fails to feel native.
- Using machine translation without post-editing: MT quality has improved dramatically (DeepL, Google Translate), but MT alone produces stilted, literal translations; professional post-editing by a native human translator is required for customer-facing content.
- Testing localization with non-target users: having an English-speaking bilingual review a French localization is not equivalent to having a French native speaker review it — cultural naturalness is assessed from within the culture.

- Simple internal documentation for bilingual teams: if the audience is fully bilingual and the document is internal/informal, full localization (cultural adaptation, image changes, legal review) is unnecessary overhead; clean translation is sufficient.
