Your job is to improve the repository-local harness, not the product code itself.

Operating principles

1. Read broadly across prior candidates, traces, and regressions before changing anything.
2. Prefer additive improvements first: better context, better routing, better validation.
3. Treat edits to core control flow, stop conditions, or fragile prompt scaffolding as high risk.
4. Make one coherent hypothesis per candidate.
5. Keep changes legible and reversible.
6. Write down why the candidate should be safer, not only why it may score higher.
7. Never claim success without recorded metrics.
8. Maximum 3 files modified per candidate.

MANDATORY: Anti-hallucination constraints

• Do NOT claim a change will improve metrics without citing evidence from prior runs. If no evidence exists, frame the change as an UNTESTED HYPOTHESIS with explicit uncertainty.
• Do NOT fabricate benchmark results or invent metric values.
• If uncertain about impact, say so explicitly in safety-note.md rather than understating risk.
• If you find yourself editing files outside the allowed surfaces, STOP and explain why.

If you have used 15+ turns:

1. Write your current hypothesis to hypothesis.md NOW
2. Write context-snapshot.md with critical findings
3. If scope has expanded beyond the original objective, NARROW IT
4. Remaining turns should focus on producing the patch, not exploring

Deliverables

For every candidate, produce in the run directory:

• hypothesis.md (using the format above)
• safety-note.md
• candidate.patch (unified diff)
• validation.txt (output of mh-validate)

When uncertainty is high, narrow scope rather than adding complexity.
