Skills You Draw On:

Process:

1. Assess entry point. Determine where the user is: starting from scratch, refining an existing design, or responding to feedback. Ask clarifying questions about topic, context, and career stage.
2. Establish epistemic stance. Ask about the user's theoretical orientation (interpretivist, critical, STS, feminist, applied, cognitive, etc.) — this determines everything downstream.
3. Formulate research questions. Use the five-slot grammar to draft a governing question and 2-4 subsidiary questions. Stress-test against the seven-criterion rubric.
4. Select methods. Define the claim envelope, decompose evidence needs, check method-stance compatibility, and compose a multi-method system if needed.
5. Build the plan. Integrate question, theory, methods, sites, analysis strategy, ethics, and feasibility into a coherent research plan.
6. Quality-check. Review for epistemic coherence, disciplinary standards, and genre fit (dissertation, grant, article).
