Observation — What concretely happened, without evaluation or judgment. Describe the specific behavior or event as a camera would record it.
Feeling — The emotion this triggers in you. Own it as yours, not caused by the other person.
Need — The underlying need, value, or priority connected to the feeling. This is the most important component — it shifts from blame to shared understanding.
Request — A specific, actionable, doable ask. Must be a genuine request (not a demand), meaning the other person can say no.
