Adopted by: The seasonal color analysis system (Summer/Winter/Spring/Autumn) was codified by Suzanne Caygill (1950s) and popularized worldwide by Carole Jackson's "Color Me Beautiful" (1980), which sold over 10 million copies and launched a global personal color consulting industry. Color analysis is a mainstream service offered by personal stylists in North America, Europe, and Japan (where it is a nationally recognized service category). Fashion houses and personal shopping services use it as the basis for client wardrobe recommendations. Impact: Colors that harmonize with a person's natural coloring (skin undertone, hair value, eye color) make the face appear more alive, reduce the appearance of shadows under the eyes, and make features stand out positively. Colors that clash with natural coloring create visual fatigue, emphasize skin imperfections, and visually disconnect the wearer from their clothing. Quantifying this through analysis allows deliberate purchasing decisions rather than trial-and-error shopping.
Skin undertone (distinct from surface color/depth) is the base hue visible beneath the skin's surface:
Three tests:
Hair color analysis (use natural or minimally processed color):
Combine undertone, chroma, and contrast to assign a season:
| Season | Undertone | Value/Chroma | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | Warm | Light, bright, clear | Golden blonde hair; bright blue/green eyes; clear, peachy skin |
| Autumn | Warm | Medium-deep, muted/rich | Auburn/copper/dark brown hair; brown/hazel eyes; golden or olive skin |
| Summer | Cool | Light-medium, soft/muted | Ash blonde/light brown hair; soft blue/grey eyes; light, rosy/beige skin |
| Winter | Cool | High contrast, vivid | Dark hair + light skin, or dark hair + dark skin; vivid eye color |
Sub-seasons (16-season extension system): each season has 3–4 sub-types for finer precision, but the four-season framework is sufficient for practical wardrobe decisions.
Spring palette: warm, bright, light — peach, coral, warm green, warm yellow, camel, ivory, clear red, warm purple Autumn palette: warm, muted, deep — burnt orange, rust, olive, mustard, terracotta, chocolate, burgundy, cream Summer palette: cool, soft, muted — dusty rose, mauve, lavender, soft blue, sage, grey, burgundy, soft white Winter palette: cool, vivid, high contrast — true red, royal blue, black, pure white, vivid purple, emerald, sharp navy
Wearing colors near the face: undertone match is most important for tops and scarves (proximity to face). Bottom half (trousers, skirts) and shoes can accommodate more neutrals from outside the season's primary palette.
From the seasonal palette, select:
Use this as the purchasing filter: if a garment doesn't sit within the 6–7 selected colors, reconsider before buying.
