Steps

1. Baseline a writing sample — prompt the learner to write 200 words on a familiar topic; analyze for error frequency by type (morphology, syntax, lexis, cohesion).
2. Map to CEFR writing level — apply CEFR descriptors to determine current writing level independently of speaking level; they often diverge.
3. Define target genres — identify the 3–5 writing genres the learner needs (email, essay, report, narrative, social post); prioritize by real-world frequency.
4. Sequence task difficulty — start with controlled tasks (sentence-level, fill-in-discourse-markers), progress to guided writing (structured prompts), then free writing.
5. Implement process writing — require draft → peer or tutor feedback → revision cycles; single-draft submission produces no error-awareness growth.
6. Apply focused corrective feedback — target one error type per feedback session (e.g., verb agreement, article use); unfocused correction on all errors overwhelms and has no proven advantage (Ferris 2002).

Rules

• Feedback must be selective, not comprehensive — marking every error in one draft is demoralizing and cognitively unprocessable.
