Conduct a room-by-room home hazard assessment and produce a prioritized remediation plan.
Conduct a room-by-room home hazard assessment and produce a prioritized remediation plan.
Adopted by: NFPA, CPSC, CDC, insurance underwriters, home inspectors, and elder-care organizations nationwide Impact: Home fires kill 2,500 Americans/year; 36 million fall injuries occur annually; 90% of home accidents are preventable; systematic audits reduce hazard exposure by 60–80% Why best: Room-by-room systematic assessment catches hazards that casual observation misses; checklists prevent cognitive overload and ensure consistent coverage

Test all smoke and CO detectors — Press test button on every detector; replace units older than 10 years (smoke) or 5–7 years (CO). Verify placement: smoke detector on every floor and outside each sleeping area; CO detector near sleeping areas and on every floor with gas appliances.
Inspect fire escape routes — Walk every bedroom: identify two exit paths, test window operation, confirm ladder availability for upper floors. Confirm address numbers visible from street for emergency responders.
Assess electrical system — Look for: overloaded outlets, extension cords used as permanent wiring, uncovered outlets (with children present), flickering lights, warm switch plates, breaker panel with fuses or double-tapped breakers. Flag for licensed electrician.
Check for fall hazards — Inspect: stair handrails (both sides, secure), step risers (uniform height, no lips), bathroom grab bars (or absence), bath mats with non-slip backing, loose rugs, adequate lighting in stairways and hallways.
Audit kitchen hazards — Verify: fire extinguisher present and charged (Class K or ABC), appliance cords away from water, no flammable items above stove, cabinet locks if children are present, stove knob covers if applicable.
Inspect water hazards — Check: water heater temperature (set to 120°F to prevent scalding), anti-scald valves on showers, any standing water or moisture indicating leaks (mold risk), sump pump operation.
Survey chemical and poison hazards — Locate all cleaning products, medications, and pesticides; verify locked or out-of-reach storage if children or cognitively impaired adults are present. Check for unlabeled containers.
Assess structural and exterior hazards — Inspect: deck/porch structural integrity (joist connectors, post bases, railing height ≥36"), walkway trip hazards, garage door auto-reverse function, window guards (if above first floor with children).
Review security systems — Test door and window locks; check exterior lighting (motion-activated at entries); verify garage door code is not factory default.
Produce prioritized remediation list — Categorize findings: Critical (immediate life-safety risk), Major (address within 30 days), Minor (address within 6 months). Assign responsible party and estimated cost for each item.
