Steps

1. Choose a method matched to the situation:

   • KonMari (Kondo): Best for whole-home transformation; sort by category (clothes → books → papers → komono → sentimental), not by room; keep only what "sparks joy."
   • Four-Box Method (Walsh): Best for room-by-room or time-limited sessions; label boxes Keep, Donate, Trash, Relocate; process every item.
   • NAPO SPACE model: Sort → Purge → Assign a home → Containerize → Equalize (maintain). Best for professional-grade, sustainable results.

2. Gather supplies before starting — Boxes/bags (keep, donate, trash, relocate), labels, markers, and timer. Never start without containers ready — loose items create new piles.

3. Set a session time limit — 2-hour blocks maximum; decision fatigue degrades quality after 90–120 minutes. Schedule multiple sessions rather than marathon sessions.

4. Process entire categories, not rooms (KonMari) — Pull every clothing item from every room before deciding. This reveals total volume, which motivates decisive action.

5. Handle each item exactly once — Make a keep/discard decision on first contact. Putting items aside to "decide later" is the primary failure mode.

6. Apply a discard decision framework:

   • KonMari: Does it spark joy?
   • Practical: Have I used this in 12 months? Would I buy it again today? Do I own a duplicate?
   • Time-bound: If I moved next month, would I take this?

7. Assign every kept item a permanent home — Items without designated locations will migrate back to flat surfaces. "A home for everything" is the prerequisite for maintaining organization.

8. Process donations immediately — Box donations go directly to car or donation drop within 24 hours. Items that re-enter the home get kept.

9. Establish sentimental item rules — Limit sentimental items to one container per person (box, bin, or drawer). Photograph items before discarding if emotional attachment is the primary reason for keeping.

• Do not declutter other people's belongings without their explicit participation and consent.

• Not scheduling donation pickup immediately — kept bags in storage rooms get raided, and items return to the home.
