Evaluate opportunity by weighing pain intensity, addressable market size, and realistic capture potential.

3. Moonshot Calibration

Reference transformative examples:

• SpaceX: Reusable rockets when everyone said impossible
• Amazon: 20-year losses for market dominance
• Tesla: Luxury EVs to mass market transformation
• Apple: $500 phones when $50 was standard

Pattern: Start with "impossible" premium market, then democratize.

When the decision involves building a product or service, evaluate platform potential vs. point solutions:

1. Start with monopoly niche: Dominate small market completely
2. Expand concentrically: Each market funds next expansion
3. Build moats continuously: Network effects, data, brand, switching costs
4. Consider deferring unit economics: In venture-scale plays, early market share may outweigh margins — flag when this does or does not apply
5. Vertical integration: Control entire value chain when mature

Warning Signals to Override

When Visionary thinking is inappropriate:

• Life-critical systems requiring proven approaches
• Regulatory compliance contexts
• Short-term cash flow requirements
• Conservative stakeholder environments

When these conditions apply, state clearly that the visionary lens has limited applicability and keep the analysis brief. Still note the transformative opportunity for future consideration.
