token-saver - in Beta

A user-toggleable Claude Code plugin that reduces token cost during a session without compromising the substance of any output and without changing the meaning of any prompt — and reports a rough, honestly-labeled estimate of tokens (and dollars) saved.

The plugin itself lives in token-saver/; this repo doubles as its Claude Code marketplace.

Install

Requires python3 on the machine. No other dependencies.

Use

• Enable/disable at any time: /token-saver on | off.
• While ON, a UserPromptSubmit hook injects a small economy directive — terser output, disciplined context use — that trims padding, never content.
• Reports usage and a clearly-labeled savings estimate: /token-saver report, /token-saver summary, optional live statusline counter (/token-saver config prints the snippet to paste).
• Separate, confirm-first compress-prompt skill to shrink verbose prompts on demand — never automatic, never changes meaning.

Design principles

1. Never change the meaning of a prompt. No silent rewriting.
2. Never compromise output substance — trim padding, not content.
3. Honest numbers — "tokens saved" is shown as a modeled estimate with its assumption visible; measured usage/cost is shown separately.
4. Zero overhead when OFF.
